Bayramov Comments on Mirzoyan's Statement Regarding the Constitution
The attempt by Armenia's Foreign Minister to draw parallels between the constitutions of Azerbaijan and Armenia is, to put it mildly, far from reality and unacceptable. This statement was made by Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov during a joint press briefing with his Hungarian counterpart while commenting on the statements made by Armenia's Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.
“The Constitution of Armenia, legislative acts, and other documents adopted by its parliament contain territorial claims against neighboring states, including Azerbaijan. The Constitution of Azerbaijan and other legislative acts do not contain territorial claims against neighboring states and Armenia. Therefore, attempts to draw parallels in this regard are unacceptable. Unfortunately, this is not the first time we have seen something like this. Clearly, such points are absent from Azerbaijani legislation. All international partners are aware of this, and no one accepts these arguments. I believe the Armenian authorities themselves know that this is baseless,” Bayramov stated.
On the previous day, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated that, in general, the constitutions of Armenia and Azerbaijan should not pose a legal problem for establishing lasting peace. “The issue of amending either our Constitution or theirs does not form part of the agenda for Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiations,” the foreign minister asserted, emphasizing that the matter of constitutional amendments is an internal decision for Armenia.
