Man Attempts to Smuggle Nearly $100 Million in Drugs into Australia
A Malaysian citizen attempted to import 100 kilograms of methamphetamine into Australia, hidden inside ordinary plastic sandals, media outlets report, citing the Australian Border Force.
Border authorities were alerted about six boxes containing identical cheap shoes arriving from Thailand. During inspection, it was discovered that drugs were concealed within each sandal.
The total value of the haul has been estimated by law enforcement at $92 million. Authorities succeeded in arresting the recipient of the package, a 49-year-old man from Malaysia, who is now facing charges of trafficking in industrial quantities of drugs.
The man has already been charged under multiple drug-related offenses and faces a potential life sentence.
