Anti-Government Protests Held in India
Indian opposition parties have united in protest against the arrest of opposition leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal just weeks before national elections, as reported by Voice of America.
The opposition accuses Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party of rigging votes and pursuing opposition figures in the taxation domain. "Narendra Modi is trying to rig the elections," stated Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Indian National Congress, during a rally in New Delhi.
Kejriwal, a sharp critic of Modi and one of the leaders of the opposition 'INDIA' coalition, was arrested on March 21 on corruption charges regarding the issuance of liquor licenses at least a month ahead of the elections. The elections will provide Modi with an opportunity to lead the government for a third time.
Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party asserts that the criminal case is fabricated and politically motivated. Modi's government and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have denied any political interference, emphasizing that law enforcement is simply doing its job.
Modi has highlighted that he is combating corruption, while the opposition claims to protect the corrupt. "Major corrupt individuals are behind bars, and even the Supreme Court does not exempt them," Modi declared at a rally in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.
The Indian National Congress argues that in addition to arrests and campaigns led by India's Financial Crimes Enforcement Agency, they are facing 'tax terrorism' due to excessive demands from the government and the freezing of several bank accounts. Critics of Modi's government state that the Prime Minister and his party are using investigative agencies and the tax service to target political opponents. Modi's party has denied the allegations.
