Amulsar Gold Mine to Be Exploited This Year, Kyurobyan
The Amulsar gold mine is set to begin production in 2024, providing around a thousand jobs. This was announced by Armenia's Minister of Economy Vahan Kyurobyan during a year-end press conference.
“Approximately a thousand new jobs will be created in Amulsar; we plan to start the exploitation of the mine this year. This is a significant project,” he stated.
It is noteworthy that the Amulsar gold deposit is the second-largest pure gold mine in Armenia. The site is located 13 kilometers away from the resort town of Jermuk, which has sparked protests, with demonstrators demanding that operations not commence. Environmentalists and local residents are concerned that the exploitation of the mine could lead to pollution of the underground waters of Jermuk and Lake Sevan, potentially causing an environmental disaster.
