The European Union Must Create Its Own Armed Forces: What Is the Goal of Italy's Foreign Minister's Proposal?
The European Union must create its own armed forces to prevent wars and maintain peace. This was stated by Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in an interview with La Stampa.
He emphasized that for his party, "Forward Italy," closer cooperation in the defense sector among European countries is a priority. "If we want to be bearers of global peace, we need a European army. This is a fundamental prerequisite for conducting effective European foreign policy," the politician believes.
The EU has repeatedly voiced the possibility of establishing a unified army. In 2021, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, stated that the EU needs a unified rapid response force. He also spoke about the necessity of creating its own armed forces following the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine in May 2022.
