Finland Considers Fully Closing Border with Russia Due to National Security Concerns
The Finnish authorities will discuss the possibility of fully closing the border with the Russian Federation if they deem that the flow of illegal migrants has not ceased. This was stated by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, as reported by TASS.
According to Yle, the Prime Minister announced that "hundreds of people" are arriving at the border to enter the EU, referring to undocumented migrants. "If such activity continues and expands, which we have signs of, we must think about closing the border and do it," the Prime Minister stated.
He added that the situation at the border "threatens national security." The idea of potentially closing the entire border was also presented by Finland's Minister of the Interior, Mari Rantanen. "If the situation does not improve, then we will discuss further options, and I believe that in the second phase, it is quite possible that the eastern border will be completely closed," she said in an interview with Yle.
