Who Will Fill the Position of First Deputy Mayor of Yerevan?
According to the newspaper "Hraparak", the ruling Civil Contract Party (CPP) is eagerly awaiting who will take on the position of the first deputy mayor of Yerevan. This appointment will clarify the nature of the relationship between Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Deputy Mayor Hrachya Avinyan, as well as who Pashinyan envisions as Avinyan's potential emergency replacement.
The fact is that out of the five deputy mayors, only the first deputy is allowed to retain their council mandate; the others must resign, losing their chance to be elected mayor in the future.
Former Minister of Emergency Situations Armen Pampukhchyan has allegedly been dispatched to the city hall not only to oversee Avinyan but also to step in if necessary. Although the CPP denies these reports, if Pampukhchyan is appointed as the first deputy in the near future, this theory will be confirmed.
Sources inform that Avinyan is resisting this change and is doing everything in his power to ensure the appointment of his close associate Levon Hovhannisyan. The most ironic part is that Aram Sargsyan's "Republican Party" is also vying for the position of the first deputy mayor.
