Many Seem to Think That Artsakh Is the Only Obstacle to the Peace Treaty: Abrahamyan
Many seem to think that the only obstacle or issue preventing the signing of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan is Artsakh, and that following Azerbaijan's use of force, the matter has been practically resolved. This was stated today by Tigran Abrahamyan, the secretary of the "Honorary Duty" faction in the National Assembly, during a press briefing.
"There is an impression among many that the obstacle to establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been Artsakh and that following Azerbaijan’s use of force in Artsakh, this issue has been practically resolved. In reality, the so-called peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan is not solely about the Artsakh block; there are many issues that arose in Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, which have hindered the signing of that treaty," he said.
According to Tigran Abrahamyan, the first obstacle is the delimitation and demarcation of borders. "The approaches of Armenia and Azerbaijan on this issue are quite different. Azerbaijan has tried to introduce various fake maps during this time and does not want to accept one map as the basis; they promote principles that cannot form the basis of negotiations. The second issue is related to the unblocking of communications, under which Azerbaijan is trying to push the so-called 'Zangezur Corridor' concept, and naturally, this topic also creates significant obstacles in the potential documents to be signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan," emphasized the parliamentarian.
According to the faction secretary, the issue of Artsakh has been a false barrier in this process. "In reality, there was a compromise on the issue of Artsakh between Armenia and Azerbaijan, its reflection was the statements made by the Armenian authorities in the last year and a half regarding recognizing Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan, and therefore this issue could not have created any obstacle in the matter of signing the treaty," Tigran Abrahamyan stated during the parliamentary briefing.
