Paris is the Most Lethal Capital in Europe Due to Heatwave
Paris is the most lethal capital in Europe due to the heatwave, according to a study published by Le Monde in The Lancet, which analyzed mortality related to temperature across 854 cities in Europe. The study indicates that while London experiences the highest mortality rates during cold waves, the French capital exhibits the greatest risk during heat events.
Due to high population density — with 20,360 inhabitants per square kilometer — Paris serves as a massive heat island. Tall buildings obstruct air circulation, construction materials retain heat well, and heavy traffic exacerbates rising temperatures during summer. The city’s status as a tourist hub and the restrictions aimed at preserving architectural heritage complicate renovation projects.
According to the Paris city hall, a decision by the French Council of Architects will result in 30% of renovation projects being blocked or canceled.
