Protesters Attempt to Set Fire to a Mayor's Car in France
Protesters attempted to set fire to the car of La Riche Mayor Philippe Poziuch during the night, as reported by him to the Nouvelle Republique newspaper. “Last night, participants of the unrest tried to set fire to the mayor’s car in La Riche. The prompt intervention of law enforcement allowed us to avoid damage,” stated a message published on the Twitter account of the prefect of the Indre-et-Loire department, as reported by RIA Novosti.
According to the mayor, quoted by Nouvelle Republique, a group of individuals entered his yard to ignite the vehicle. He dispersed them and began to extinguish the fire. The mayor noted that he had informed the police about the threats he has received during the week. He intends to file a complaint with the authorities regarding the attempted arson.
On the morning of June 27, police shot a 17-year-old teenager in Nantes during a traffic stop, who reportedly refused to comply with their orders. Unrest has started in several cities across France, continuing for several days. According to the Ministry of Interior, approximately 3,800 vehicles have been set ablaze by youth throughout the country, along with buildings of the police and government bodies. The Ministry of Economy reports that around 250 bank branches, 200 grocery stores, and close to 10 shopping centers have been looted.
Special police units have been deployed in several cities, while armored vehicles and helicopters have been put into operation. A total of about 3,000 people have been arrested, including many minors.
