EU Holds High Hopes for Upcoming Brussels Meeting Between Armenia and Azerbaijan: Borrell
The European Union's mission is part of the process to establish peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but it cannot fully replace the process itself. This was stated by the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, during a discussion in the European Parliament on the topic of "Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the Situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and the Lachin Corridor."
According to Borrell, the only resolution lies within the diplomatic realm, and both parties have expressed a willingness to continue negotiations, with the next meeting taking place in Brussels, which the EU holds high hopes for.
“The EU is committed to establishing peace in the South Caucasus. To that end, it is undertaking both humanitarian initiatives and direct efforts to facilitate peace-oriented negotiations. We are also involved in efforts to locate individuals who went missing during the conflict and to prevent further clashes,” Borrell said.
The senior diplomat also noted that the EU monitoring mission does not have access to the Lachin Corridor.
Borrell pointed out that the socio-economic situation in Nagorno-Karabakh is quite serious. For this reason, over the past two years, the EU has implemented various initiatives to provide humanitarian aid to local residents, having already allocated 70 million euros.
