Trump Charged with Keeping Secret Documents
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that his lawyers have been informed of the charges brought against him. According to Trump, these charges are "apparently related to boxes of secret documents found at his estate." He has been summoned to appear in federal court in Miami on Tuesday, June 13, as reported by Reuters.
Trump has been charged with seven counts, according to CNN. Specifically, he is suspected of violating the Espionage Act, obstructing justice, destroying or falsifying documents, conspiracy, and making false statements, his lawyer Jim Trusty stated on the television channel. The politician denies the charges.
On June 7, Politico reported that a criminal investigation was launched against Donald Trump. FBI agents came to his estate in August without warning and searched the premises. In total, 300 secret documents were found in the building.
In April, the former president was also charged with first-degree business document falsification, in this case involving 34 instances. Prosecutors believe the purpose of the falsifications was to hide information that could have hindered Mr. Trump's victory in the 2016 elections. The trial for this case is scheduled for 2024.
