Trump Discusses Work with Putin on Nuclear Weapons
Former U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that during his presidency, he worked with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to end nuclear weapons. This was stated by the Republican during an interview with Fox News. He emphasized that this type of weapon is "extremely powerful."
"I worked with Putin to start getting rid of nuclear weapons," Trump said. He also added that countries today are experiencing "the most dangerous period in the history of the world," as the likelihood of a nuclear war is high.
Previously, the U.S. State Department announced that Washington had ceased the transfer of information about weapons under the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty to Moscow. The White House's decision took effect on June 1.
From now on, Washington will no longer provide Moscow with information regarding the status and deployment of its strategic weapons, which are subject to further mutual reductions under bilateral agreements concerning deployed strategic nuclear arsenals.
Military expert Alexei Leonkov stated that the U.S. decision to refuse to provide ranges for intercontinental ballistic missile launches threatens the security of the entire world. He noted that it will now be more difficult for Moscow to recognize whether the next launch is a training exercise or a combat operation.
In turn, the Russian embassy in Washington stated that the U.S. counteractions will not affect Moscow's position within the context of the treaty. The diplomatic mission noted that resuming the treaty would help U.S. authorities abandon their hostile stance towards Russia.
