Latvia's New President Elected: Current Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs
Latvia's parliament has elected the current Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs as the country’s new president during the third round of voting, reports RIA Novosti. Rinkēvičs' candidacy was supported by 52 lawmakers, while 35 voted against him. To be elected, a candidate must obtain at least 51 votes.
The President of Latvia is elected by parliament for a term of four years. The current head of state, Egils Levits, has decided not to run for a second term.
Interestingly, media reports indicate that Latvia's new president openly acknowledged his homosexual orientation back in 2014.
