Public Television Comments on Controversial Interview with Super Sako
The Public Television has addressed the recent interview that caused a stir, featuring rapper Super Sako as the guest.
It is worth recalling that during the interview, Super Sako expressed his opinion on the Armenian nature of Komitas' musical artistry and mugham, which has sparked criticism.
“Dear viewers, according to the laws of the Republic of Armenia, the Public Broadcaster is obliged to provide ‘programs and types of broadcasts that present the interests of various regions of the Republic of Armenia, national minorities, and different layers and social groups of the society.’ Remaining faithful to our legislative obligations, First Channel provides a platform for different segments of our society. However, recently, Public has often faced criticism for granting airtime to individuals with differing opinions, while the term ‘public’ itself denotes precisely that diversity and multiplicity of viewpoints.
The television company is categorically opposed to discriminatory policies in the selection of guests based on the preferences and opinions of various groups. We reject attempts at censorship and limitations on freedom of speech. The interviews and programs broadcasted on Public include not only informational content but also present the opinions of various individuals, and their airing does not imply that the Television shares the expressed thoughts.
Views of publicly interesting figures may contain controversial provisions; in a free society, they can be discussed and criticized; this is what diversity of opinion demands. Addressing the latest incident that provoked such comments, we note that the individual was invited considering their audience within the community. During the conversation, the host directly refuted the guest's opinion about Komitas.
At the core of First Channel’s program policy are broadcasts, concerts, and film series dedicated to renowned Armenians, including Komitas, as well as the annual concerted segment of the ‘Komitas’ International Conference-Festival. In the last 30 days alone, Public has aired 13 programs detailing the life and legacy of Master Komitas.
Public diligently monitors public opinions, especially criticisms, and takes them into account when constructing the broadcasting network,” the statement from the television company reads.
