Biden: 'The U.S. is Prepared to Defend Japan by Any Means Necessary, Including Nuclear'

Ahead of the G7 summit, a bilateral meeting took place in Hiroshima between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and U.S. President Joe Biden. The White House leader expressed readiness to defend Japan by any means necessary, including nuclear options. This information was reported by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It was noted that the parties exchanged views on cooperation in the field of security, strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance's deterrence and response capabilities. “President Biden reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Japan’s defense in accordance with the Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty, utilizing all available means, including nuclear,” the statement said.

The parties also agreed to continue close cooperation on matters related to China. They reiterated the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The U.S. leader welcomed the improvement of relations between Japan and South Korea. Biden and Kishida agreed to continue working together with South Korea towards the complete denuclearization of North Korea, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

The G7 summit will be held in Hiroshima from May 19-21. As previously reported, enhanced security measures have been implemented ahead of the summit. Approximately 24,000 police officers will ensure order in Hiroshima, and 140 educational institutions will be temporarily closed. Mazda Motor, one of Japan's major auto manufacturers, has also halted operations until Monday. Restrictions will also apply to tourists.
