Agreement Reached for Armenia and Azerbaijan Leaders to Meet in Moldova: EU

Despite the statements coming from Baku, the European Union has reaffirmed that there is an agreement for the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to meet not only in Brussels but also in Moldova, with the participation of the French President and the German Chancellor, reports Azatutyun.

“As stated in the announcement by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, we want to reiterate that there is an agreement for the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to meet with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in Brussels on May 14, and that this will be accompanied by a meeting in Chișinău within the framework of the European Political Community Summit, with the participation of German Chancellor Scholz and French President Macron,” said Michel's spokesperson.

Earlier today, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that President Aliyev might not participate in the meeting in Chișinău. Moreover, the spokesperson for the ministry insisted that the five-party meeting is unofficial and can only be held under the precondition set by Baku.

“We have stated that the Azerbaijani side may participate on the condition that it does not replace the Brussels format. However, a final agreement has not yet been reached, as the details of the meeting have not been disclosed,” said Ayxan Hacızadə.

From Brussels, however, they counter that all parties have previously given political agreement for both the meeting involving Charles Michel and the five-party meetings planned in Chișinău. “We are prepared for their conduct,” Berend Leyts, spokesperson for the President of the European Council, told Azatutyun.
