US to Establish Military Bases in Finland
Finland and the United States are preparing a bilateral agreement that will allow for the establishment of American military bases in the country. This was reported by Mikhael Antel, Deputy Head of the Political Department of Finland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper.
While details of the agreement between the two countries are still being clarified, it is known that it will not pertain to nuclear weapons.
“The agreement allows for troops to enter the country, remain on its territory, station and store materials, and also make investments in infrastructure funded by the Pentagon through appropriations provided by the US Congress,” Helsingin Sanomat quotes Antel.
As noted by the BBC's Russian service, the US has similar agreements with other NATO countries. In April 2023, Finland officially became a NATO member, a decision that was made by Finnish authorities immediately after the onset of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
