What Stage is the Case Regarding Armen Sarkissian's Foreign Citizenship?
What stage is the case regarding the fourth President of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, and his foreign citizenship? To obtain information on this matter, Sputnik Armenia submitted a written inquiry to the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia. In response to the inquiry, the NSS indicated that the criminal proceedings have been sent to the Investigative Committee.
“We inform you that the criminal proceedings concerning the fourth President of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, have been sent to the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia for jurisdictional review,” stated the NSS response.
It is worth mentioning that former President Armen Sarkissian resigned on January 23, 2022, citing that the president lacks the necessary tools to influence internal and external political processes in the current complex times for the country and the nation.
The following day, Hetq.am published information claiming that Sarkissian had held citizenship of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis before being elected as president, which rendered him ineligible for the position. According to the publication, Sarkissian acquired this citizenship in exchange for investments amounting to $500,000.
On January 25, the Prosecutor General's Office informed the media that the NSS would verify whether Armen Sarkissian possessed citizenship of Saint Kitts and Nevis at the time of his election as the President.
