It is not yet a fact that we will sign it. Pashinyan on the peace treaty

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan believes in the peace agenda. He made this statement during a brief conversation with media representatives at the National Assembly.

“It is important for us that guarantees are included in negotiations. The lack of guarantees is a significant feature of our international situation. Today, there is no country in the world that can say, ‘I guarantee that this will happen tomorrow,’ including its own security,” said Pashinyan.

In response to the question of why we are signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan under these circumstances, Pashinyan mentioned that it is not a fact that “we are signing it.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that he is prepared and hopes a peace treaty will be signed within the framework of addressing the issues he has raised. He added that the peace treaty is being signed (if, of course, it is signed) because otherwise, everything will happen in a way that we do not want. According to him, if it is signed, the likelihood of that happening is low.

At the same time, addressing the statements from the Azerbaijani side, he noted that Azerbaijan makes provocative statements to engage Armenia in its planned agenda.

It is noteworthy that in 2021, Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev announced his willingness to sign a peace treaty with Armenia. In March 2022, Baku presented a five-point proposal for normalizing relations to Yerevan. The Armenian side added corrections and sent its version back. Since then, several rounds of negotiations have taken place between the parties at different levels.
