Document Leak Poses Threat to U.S. National Security: Pentagon
The online leak of numerous highly classified documents regarding the Ukrainian war poses a "very serious" threat to national security, and senior officials are taking quick actions to mitigate the damage, a senior Pentagon representative said on Monday. This was reported by U.S. News.
Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Chris Meagher informed reporters that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was first made aware of a series of secret briefings detailing U.S. military operations in the Ukraine war, as well as intelligence data from other countries, last Thursday.
Since being notified, Austin has contacted allies, conducted daily damage assessment meetings, and assembled a team not only to evaluate the volume of lost information but also to verify who had access to those briefings. The department is closely monitoring "how this type of information is spread and by whom," Meagher stated, while not specifying what measures have already been taken to tighten control.
The documents contain sensitive information about the Ukraine war, as well as details concerning China and U.S. allies. Officials state that the files are in the format typically provided to senior officials, according to BBC.
An investigation has been launched to determine the source of the leak.
Some of the documents, which according to some officials have been altered, first appeared on online platforms such as Twitter, 4chan, and Telegram, as well as on Discord servers for the Minecraft video game. In addition to highly detailed information about the Ukrainian war, some leaked documents reportedly shed light on materials related to secret briefings concerning U.S. allies.
Reports indicate that some of the documents pertain to defense and security issues in the Middle East, as well as in the Indo-Pacific region.
