Israeli Defense Minister Dismissed After Criticizing Judicial Reforms

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed Defense Minister Yoav Gallant from his position. This decision comes after Gallant publicly called for the government to halt the introduction of radical judicial reforms. For three months now, protests have erupted across Israel regarding the government's plans to limit the powers of the Supreme Court. Currently, the Supreme Court has the authority to block parliamentary decisions if deemed unlawful, as reported by the BBC.

Speaking on television on Saturday, Gallant pointed out that the proposed judicial reform has caused significant division within society, as well as unprecedented feelings of anger, pain, and disappointment that have also affected the military. “This is a clear, immediate and tangible threat to the security of the state,” stated the now former defense minister. He added that he refuses to support the initiative in its current form and called for constructive dialogue.

Following this statement, the Prime Minister summoned the minister and informed him that he had lost confidence in him, and that he could no longer lead the defense ministry.
