The European Union Has Completely Freed Itself from Energy Dependence on Russia: Borrell
The European Union has managed to completely free itself from energy dependence on Russia. This was stated by Josep Borrell, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in an interview with Diario.
He noted that energy prices have returned to their levels prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. “In just a few months, we eliminated the energy dependence we had on the Russian Federation for years,” said the head of European diplomacy.
At the beginning of 2023, gas prices in the EU began to decrease due to a mild winter, high gas storage levels, and increased electricity production from wind power. On January 17, for the first time since August 2021, the price of gas dropped below $600 per thousand cubic meters. On Friday, January 20, in an auction, the value of the energy carrier increased by 12%, reaching $760 per thousand cubic meters.
