Why the Iraqi Ambassador Was Summoned by Iran's Foreign Ministry

The Iraqi ambassador has been summoned by Iran's Foreign Ministry over the 'incorrect' naming of the Persian Gulf. This was reported by the IRNA news agency.

According to Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, despite Iran's 'strategic, fraternal, and deep relations with Iraq,' diplomats have lodged a complaint against Baghdad for using a 'false name' for the Persian Gulf. Tehran's discontent was triggered by the opening of the 25th Persian Gulf Cup in Iraq on January 6, which is often referred to as the 'Arabian Gulf Cup.' Many Iraqi politicians use this name in their official statements.

According to RIA Novosti, FIFA President Gianni Infantino referred to the Persian Gulf as 'Arabian' during his speech at the tournament's opening. This name was also used by the leader of Iraq's 'Mahdi Army,' Muqtada al-Sadr.

Earlier, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg announced that he summoned the Iranian ambassador following the executions on January 7. In his message, the politician condemned the execution of Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini, who were arrested during protests in Iran.
