How a Husband and Mother-in-Law Led a 25-Year-Old Woman to Attempt Suicide

The investigative department of the Gegharkunik regional investigative office of the RA Investigative Committee has clarified the circumstances surrounding the case of a 25-year-old woman from Gegharkunik who attempted suicide.

The investigation, initiated on November 21, 2022, under the third part of Article 162 of the RA Criminal Code, revealed that the 25-year-old woman had been in a factual marital relationship with a 27-year-old resident of Sevan for about three years. During their cohabitation, the man regularly exhibited a cynical attitude towards the woman's dignity and mental state, subjecting her to physical abuse and verbally insulting her and her relatives.

On November 21, 2022, the 27-year-old man struck the woman again, humiliating her dignity and making threats. Driven by the cruel and degrading behavior exhibited by her husband, and unable to endure the mental anguish, the woman, even considering her young child in her care, went to the pedestrian overpass constructed along the 62nd km of the Yerevan-Sevan-Ijevan highway around 9:00 PM that same day and jumped off in an attempt to take her own life, resulting in bodily harm.

During the preliminary investigation, it was also revealed that while the 27-year-old man regularly subjected the 25-year-old woman to physical abuse and made sexual insults towards her relatives, the mother of the man, aware that her son's actions were causing physical and mental suffering to the 25-year-old woman, instead of reprimanding her son, accepted the situation as normal and even condoned the violence exercised by her son, further displaying a cruel and degrading attitude.

A public criminal prosecution has been initiated based on the established facts, and charges have been brought against the 27-year-old man and his mother under the third part of Article 162 of the RA Criminal Code. As a preventive measure, a restriction on absence has been selected for them. The preliminary investigation continues.
