The 35-year-old forward of the Argentine national team and French champion PSG, Lionel Messi, opened the scoring with a penalty kick (watch the video) in the first round match of the group stage against Saudi Arabia at the World Cup.

After the use of VAR, a penalty was awarded against the Saudi Arabian team. The Argentine team is currently leading by a minimal score, with the first half ongoing.

This is Messi's fifth appearance at the World Cup, and he has scored his seventh goal in the tournament's main event. Messi has matched the record held by Mexicans Antonio Carvajal, Rafael Márquez, German Lothar Matthäus, and Italian Gianluigi Buffon for the most appearances in World Cup finals, each having participated five times.
