VIDEO: Azerbaijani Troops Must Return to Their Original Positions – Mirzoyan to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe
On September 21, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Maria Peichinovich Buric, on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ararat Mirzoyan presented to his counterpart the details of the aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan against the sovereign territory of Armenia, deeming the deliberate targeting of the civilian population and critical infrastructure by Azerbaijani armed forces as unacceptable, as well as instances of inhumane treatment and torture of Armenian servicemen and prisoners of war.
The Armenian Foreign Minister stated that such actions by Azerbaijan are a blatant disregard for the fundamental norms of international law and the obligations undertaken by member states within the framework of the Council of Europe, and they must have appropriate consequences.
The Armenian side emphasized the importance of maintaining Armenia’s territorial integrity, the return of Azerbaijani troops to their original positions, the immediate repatriation of Armenian prisoners of war, and the need for restoring stability and establishing peace in the region.
Ararat Mirzoyan highlighted the need to ensure uninterrupted access for international organizations to Nagorno-Karabakh. The minister also expressed hope that the Council of Europe would be more resolute and consistent in protecting the fundamental rights of the residents of Artsakh.
Both sides emphasized the importance of the continuity of the reform process taking place in Armenia within the framework of Armenia-Council of Europe cooperation.
