Beijing Responds to Biden's Statements
US President Joe Biden stated in an interview with CBS that the United States would intervene if China invades Taiwan. The reporter raised the question of whether the US armed forces, American men and women, would protect Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, unlike in Ukraine. Biden responded to this question with a "yes." He added that Taiwan makes its own decisions regarding its independence and that the US does not encourage them; it is their decision.
In response to Biden's remarks, China lodged a protest with the US. According to Reuters, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning stated that China reserves the right to take all necessary measures in response to actions that divide the nation. "We want to do everything for peaceful reunification. At the same time, we will not tolerate any actions aimed at separatism," said the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman.
The official also urged the US to address issues related to Taiwan "with caution" and refrain from sending "wrong signals" to separatist forces seeking Taiwan's independence. Mao Ning also warned the US against harming China-US relations and the peace in the Taiwan Strait.
