Macron, Scholz, and Draghi Urge Zelensky to Start Negotiations with Russia
During their visit to Ukraine, the leaders of Germany, France, and Italy advocated for granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate member. "In return, EU leaders likely urged Zelensky to come to the negotiation table with Russian President Vladimir Putin behind closed doors," reports the German newspaper Die Welt.
Macron, who is reportedly more concerned about the swift end of the hostilities than Ukraine's territorial integrity, aimed to "clarify his position" during his visit to Kyiv.
Draghi, attending the meeting, sought to demonstrate Rome's status as a key player in the European Union. "However, like Macron, it is also important for Draghi that the crisis comes to an end as soon as possible; if the productivity of the economy does not recover due to the conflict, it will threaten the country's stability," the publication notes.
