National Assembly Staff Plans to Tighten Security Measures

The tightening of security measures in the National Assembly will not be limited to new regulations regarding the movement of journalists and the installation of metal detectors near the entrances to the assembly's meetings. The National Assembly staff is discussing the installation of new doors in the corridors of the parliament and distributing electronic passes to the members of parliament.

Anna Grigoryan, the deputy head of the National Assembly staff, confirmed that such working discussions are underway. In an interview with NEWS.am, she stated that the aim of these measures is not to impose restrictions but rather to establish a more systematic and collaborative relationship between the media and the National Assembly.

“The necessity arises solely from security considerations. We refer to the regime adopted on December 16, 2016, which came into effect in 2017, but did not include provisions from the ‘Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly’ law. Those provisions have now been incorporated, and it is these that justify the changes, which, I reiterate, stem from security concerns. I assure you there are no other intentions. Journalists will have the right to carry out their activities in designated special areas. Additionally, if a journalist wishes to photograph a member of parliament in their office, they will be accompanied to the parliamentary member's room. If the idea of these doors is implemented, you, for example, will not be able to pass through without an escort,” noted Anna Grigoryan.
