VIDEO. Eruption of Indonesia's Most Active Volcano Begins
On Wednesday morning, Indonesia's most active volcano, Merapi, began to erupt. Al Arabiya reported that lava has already flowed down the slope for up to 1500 meters. Emissions of incandescent gases have started from the crater, according to TASS.
Merapi rises to 2,968 meters in height, and its name translates to "Fire Mountain." It is considered the most active volcano in Indonesia. In 2016, an eruption from this volcano resulted in the deaths of 347 people, with more than 60,000 others forced to evacuate their homes.
The world's largest Indonesian archipelago, which consists of 18,000 islands, is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. There are more than 500 volcanoes in the region, 127 of which are active.
