Authorities Tried to Convince Marukyan Until Late at Night
The newspaper "Zhoghovurd" reports: "Yesterday, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian finally signed the package of laws, whereby his signature is no longer necessary for the constitutional amendments to come into effect; it is sufficient that this information be published on the National Assembly’s website. Thus, the draft on constitutional amendments stipulates that they come into effect the day after the official publication. In other words, even if Ararat Mirzoyan signs it today, it will only come into effect tomorrow, June 25.
The intrigue lies here: the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) has initiated a petition to appeal to the Constitutional Court (CC), has gathered 25 signatures, and is two signatures short. They have reached out to the Bright Armenia Party (LHK). If the necessary number of signatures is collected and the application is submitted to the CC today, then the application of the provisions of the law will be suspended until the CC reviews it. This means, with the current composition of the CC.
"Zhoghovurd" reports in its current issue that the opposition LHK has given its consent and will announce this at a press conference today. However, we note that prior to President Sarkissian’s signing, the representatives of the authorities attempted to convince Marukyan not to appeal to the CC, but according to our sources, they were unable to do so. Nevertheless, everything is not over yet, and perhaps there will be changes before the press conference."
