European Conservatives and Reformists Party Expresses Concern Over Armenian Government Actions
The European Conservatives and Reformists Party has expressed serious concern regarding the recent actions of the Armenian government.
“On June 16, the ruling party in the Armenian parliament voted in favor of stripping MP Gagik Tsarukyan of his parliamentary immunity after he criticized the government on several issues, including the resolution of the coronavirus crisis. Opposition parties boycotted the vote, and protesters supporting the ‘Prosperous Armenia’ party were arrested outside the parliament building. Just before the vote, on early Sunday morning, National Security Service forces raided the offices of the ‘Prosperous Armenia’ party and the private residence of G. Tsarukyan,” the statement reads.
Richard Milsom, the Executive Director of the ECR, notes, “Two years ago, the promise of a revolution and a newer, more open country was a turning point for the Republic of Armenia. Today, the government is jeopardizing the values that the revolution defended.”
The ECR party is closely monitoring the developments in Armenia.
