UN Security Council to Hold Urgent Meeting on Libya
The UN Security Council will hold an urgent meeting on Libya this evening. This was reported by the TASS agency, citing the permanent representative of Russia to the UN, Fyodor Strzhizhovskiy.
“The closed consultations will begin at 15:00 New York time,” said the representative.
The emergency meeting of the Security Council is related to the shelling of a shelter for African refugees in the eastern suburbs of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, which, according to Al Jazeera, resulted in the deaths of 60 people and injured more than a hundred.
It has been confirmed that the airstrike was carried out by forces loyal to General Khalifa Haftar. This is the bloodiest attack by Haftar's forces in the last three months, aimed at capturing the capital, which is under the control of the internationally recognized government.
It is worth noting that earlier this spring, Haftar ordered an assault on Tripoli to “liberate it from terrorists.”
