Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Resigns

The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Irakli Kobakhidze, resigned today following large-scale protests that took place last night in the capital city of Tbilisi. The TASS agency reports this information with reference to Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.

“Since coming to power, the ‘Georgian Dream’ has set a high standard of accountability before the public, and has repeatedly demonstrated this through its actions. Today’s decision of Irakli Kobakhidze to resign as Speaker of the Parliament is another example of that high standard of accountability,” Kaladze said in a briefing with journalists.

Today, an extraordinary session of the ruling party's political council was held to discuss the events that occurred last night and during the early hours in Tbilisi. Earlier, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Giorgi Gakharia, announced that he is prepared to resign if necessary.
