Retired Soldiers Protest, Urging Current Servicemen to See Their Future

Today, retired officers of the Armed Forces of Armenia presented their concerns outside the government building. They stated that they have been waiting for decades to receive housing allocated for military personnel under the previous law, and now the law is being changed (the draft has been put up for public discussion), providing 50% of the cadastral value for housing in Yerevan and 100% in the regions.

“But with the amounts they are offering, no one can buy a house. The old law stated that we should be provided with free housing, but they want to replace free housing with very minimal financial support. I declare that I will give the 6.5 million drams, go ahead, buy 100 one-bedroom apartments, or with 9.5 million drams, a two-bedroom apartment, or 10.5 million drams, a three-bedroom apartment,” said Karen Hakobyan.

According to Hakobyan, the full compensation for the value of housing in the regions is a policy to differentiate between retired officers living in the regions and those in Yerevan.

“Let current servicemen look at us and see what awaits them. The issue is not just about housing. It is also about the payment for leave, which has already been recognized as unconstitutional,” he added.
