Closure of Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant Will Increase Armenia's Energy Dependency: Zakharova
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Maria Zakharova, has stated that the Metsamor nuclear power plant is a key element of Armenia's energy balance, and its closure will only increase the country's reliance on external sources of energy.
“Today, the Metsamor NPP plays a critical role in the republic's energy balance, producing about 30% of electricity. The stable production of affordable electricity has allowed Armenia to develop its industry and ensure technological advancement for many years. In the modern world, especially considering the unsuccessful experiences of several European countries in transitioning to renewable energy sources, the peaceful use of nuclear energy is a factor of sovereignty and energy security,” noted Zakharova.
