Poland Prepares to File Compensation Claim Against Russia

Poland is preparing to file a legal claim against Russia related to possible compensation for the consequences of 'Soviet domination'. The initiative stems from a study conducted at the direction of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Bartosz Gondek, the director of the coordinating institute for the investigation, noted that the work is expected to be carried out in a broad format. According to him, it may be more comprehensive than previous studies related to Nazi crimes.

In 2022, Poland demanded approximately 6.2 trillion zlotys from Germany for damages caused by World War II. Berlin stated that it has no plans for additional payments, emphasizing that Poland waived reparations in 1953.

In February 2024, Poland's new Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski declared that the issue of reparations from Germany is closed, stating that there are no legal grounds for such claims. The Russian Foreign Ministry has characterized Poland's potential demands as political statements, and the Kremlin has described such initiatives as manifestations of anti-Russian sentiment. Meanwhile, the Russian side has repeatedly stated that such claims will not have legal grounds.
