Kyiv Needs 30-50 Years of Security Guarantees, Zelensky
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asserts that Ukraine has received a 15-year proposal for security guarantees from the United States, but the country desires 30-50 years. "We just had a meeting with investors, and they need longer-term guarantees than five or ten years... We have a 15-year proposal from the American side... We want 20+ years, 30-50 years. We will see what the administration and Congress agree upon," Zelensky said during a press conference at the Munich Security Conference.
On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that security guarantees for Ukraine currently imply not a pan-European security but a continuation of the conflict against Russia. He recalled that during the negotiations with Ukrainians in Istanbul in April 2022, security guarantees played a central role. This was convenient for Moscow as it truly related to the collective format of security guarantees, Lavrov explained, noting that today all of this has been "crossed out."
