Armenia Cannot Simultaneously Be a Member of Both the EU and EAEU, Says Overchuk
The changing nature of the European Union, which is transforming from an economic bloc into a geopolitical union, must be taken into account when Armenia decides to join the EU. This statement was made by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, according to TASS.
He noted that the choice of integration unions always remains with the Armenian people. Overchuk emphasized that the nature of the EU is evolving today, and the union is acquiring characteristics of a geopolitical community that is "aggressively predisposed against Russia."
“Are Armenians ready to join a geopolitical union that is currently very aggressively disposed toward the Russian Federation? Perhaps Armenians will also have to ask themselves this question,” Overchuk stated.
He also mentioned that the official process of negotiations regarding Armenia's membership in the EU could take “many years.” He added that Armenia cannot be a member of both the EU and the EAEU at the same time, as Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had previously stated.
“If such a choice is ever made, it will be comprehensive, taking into account the dynamics we see in the changing nature of the European Union today,” Overchuk concluded.
