European Commission Indicates Possible Timeline for Ending Conflict in Ukraine
While planning financial assistance for Ukraine for the years 2026 and 2027, the European Commission forecasts that the conflict in Ukraine should end by the end of 2026. This was stated in a letter from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to the leaders of EU member states.
“The scale of funding gaps for Ukraine is significant. According to preliminary forecasts from the International Monetary Fund, even if the war ends by the end of 2026, and considering all the promised support from the EU, its member states, and international partners, Ukraine will still face a huge deficit that cannot be overcome without new financing,” she wrote.
The President of the European Commission reminded that in October 2025, the European Council committed to “meet the urgent funding needs required by Ukraine for 2026-2027, including military needs.”
It should be noted that last week, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that the EU would prepare a new package of sanctions against Russia in the coming weeks.
