Experts Warn of Targeted Attacks Linked to Azerbaijani Transfers
Informational security expert Samvel Martirosyan wrote: "Warning about targeted attacks. Let me describe the scenario.
- A fake WhatsApp or Viber account contacts you, posing as a close acquaintance. This person, whom you trust, has been well-prepared. They claim that the National Security Service (NSS) has discovered a serious problem. They assure you that your acquaintance has endorsed cooperation and that a NSS employee will contact you soon.
- A fake employee then calls you. They speak in Russian and state that millions of dollars have been transferred from Azerbaijan to your account. When you ask why they are speaking Russian, the response is that this is a joint operation with Azerbaijan and the materials must be used in the court there.
- Then, they involve the Central Bank, claiming you need to withdraw your funds in cash from the bank and transfer them to a new account to avoid mixing with the bad money.
As you can understand, the money will be lost.
Interesting facts:
- In the cases I know of, representatives of civil society and the press have been targeted. However, it's possible that broader targeting exists.
- They are well-prepared, investigating people's connections.
