Germany Withdraws Its Ambassador from Georgia

Germany has decided to withdraw its ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, as reported by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Berlin assesses that the Georgian leadership has been fostering hostility towards the EU and personally against Germany's ambassador for several months.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Fischer is being recalled for consultations and to discuss 'further steps.' The German Foreign Office also emphasized that the EU Foreign Affairs Council will discuss the situation in Georgia on October 20.

In September, Georgian authorities accused Fischer of interfering in the country's internal affairs due to his critical statements regarding the government's political line and his participation in trials against opposition figures. At that time, the ambassador was summoned by the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

EU-Georgia relations have significantly deteriorated over the past year after the 'Georgian Dream' party, which supports improving relations with Russia, won the elections. 'Georgian Dream' has effectively frozen the constitutionally enshrined course towards European integration, leading to mass protests.
