Activist Greta Thunberg Complains About Conditions in Israeli Prison
Environmental activist Greta Thunberg has informed Swedish authorities about the harsh treatment she received in an Israeli prison following her detention and expulsion from a humanitarian aid flotilla heading to Gaza, as reported by The Guardian.
According to correspondence, another detainee revealed that Thunberg was made to hold flags for photographs, although the specific flags have not been disclosed. In a letter from the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an official who visited Thunberg stated that she was held in a cell infested with lice, with inadequate food and water. Thunberg reported experiencing dehydration, a skin rash, and prolonged sitting on hard surfaces.
Thunberg was a member of the “Sumud Global Flotilla,” a group consisting of over 40 ships intended to break the 16-year naval blockade of Gaza imposed by Israel. A total of 437 activists, parliamentarians, and lawyers participated in the action. From Thursday to Friday, Israeli forces seized all the ships and arrested the entire crew, the majority of whom are being held in the Ketziot prison in the Negev Desert, where Palestinian prisoners accused of participating in combat activities or terrorism are typically held.
