CIA Director Warns of Escalation Risks Between Israel and Iran
William Burns, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), has warned that certain "unintended things" are threatening to escalate relations between Israel and Iran in the coming weeks.
"We are facing a very real danger of further escalation of conflict in the region. You can see unintended clashes, misunderstandings, actions that come to life, and I think that is a challenge for the United States and American politicians," Burns' words are quoted by Bloomberg during the Cipher Brief Threat conference held in Sea Island.
According to the CIA director, neither Israeli nor Iranian leaders are seeking large-scale conflict; however, the threat of escalation remains. He believes that Israeli leadership is "very carefully weighing" how to respond to Iran's recent attack.
Burns stated that Israel is "considering" the concerns expressed by U.S. President Joe Biden and other senior political figures. He also highlighted the potential impacts of various influences, including on the global energy market and the global economy.
On October 1, Iran attacked Israel with a massive missile strike for the second time in history, labeling it an act of self-defense. The Israeli army reports that approximately 180 ballistic missiles were launched, many of which were intercepted. Videos on social media have captured the aftermath of the projectiles landing in various areas of Israel. According to Israeli authorities, there were no casualties or injuries among the country’s citizens. Several media outlets report one death on the West Bank, allegedly a Palestinian from the Gaza Strip.
Iran claims that the missiles struck Israeli military facilities, while Israel describes the damage as "minimal." They promise to retaliate, and the U.S. is expected to come to the aid of its key Middle Eastern ally. Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated after the Iranian missile attack on Israel that the Biden administration has failed in the Middle East, exhibiting complete helplessness in addressing crises.
