Armenia Marks 34th Anniversary of Independence
Armenia celebrates the 34th anniversary of its independence on September 21. 34 years ago, the Armenian people decisively voted 'Yes' to the independence of Armenia through a referendum. With a 95% participation rate among the adult population, 99.5% of voters responded positively to the question: 'Do you agree that the Republic of Armenia should be a democratic independent state outside the USSR?'
Two days later, on September 23, the country's Supreme Council declared Armenia an independent, sovereign republic. This declaration marked the beginning of the history of the Third Republic of Armenia.
For over 30 years, only the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Armenia have been in effect throughout its territory. The first Constitution of the Third Republic was adopted on July 5, 1995, following a nationwide referendum. The current Constitution was adopted on November 6, 2015, also through a nationwide referendum.
The national flag of the Republic of Armenia is a tricolor featuring red, blue, and orange, and the emblem of independent Armenia is based on the emblem of the First Republic of Armenia (1918-1920), designed by architect Alexander Tamanyan and artist Hakob Kojoyan. The national anthem is also the anthem of the First Republic of Armenia. The lyrics were penned by Mikael Nalbandian, while the music is attributed to Barsegh Kanachyan. A new arrangement of the anthem was made in 2025.
