EU Considers Accelerating Stop of Russian Natural Gas Imports
The European Union is discussing the acceleration of a phased halt to imports of Russian liquefied natural gas following U.S. President Donald Trump's call to reduce reliance on Russian oil. Bloomberg reports that the EU is developing measures to expedite the gradual stop of Russian liquefied natural gas imports in response to the Trump administration's calls to limit energy trade with Moscow.
According to sources cited by Bloomberg, the new sanctions package currently being prepared by the EU may include a provision to completely halt imports of Russian liquefied natural gas by the end of 2027. The European Commission is also contemplating changes to the RePowerEU initiative aimed at diminishing dependence on Russian energy sources. The initiative plans for an accelerated transition to alternative supply sources and the development of domestic energy infrastructure.
