Trump Decides to Withdraw the U.S. from UNESCO
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, is pulling the country out of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This was reported by The New York Post (NYP).
It is noted that the decision was made based on the organization’s "anti-Israel and anti-American" sentiments. According to a White House spokesperson speaking to NYP, after conducting a review, administration officials disagreed with UNESCO’s policies on diversity, equality, and inclusion, as well as its perceived bias towards Palestine and China.
“President Trump has decided to withdraw the United States from UNESCO, which supports divisive, cultural, and social issues that are entirely contrary to common sense and the policies for which Americans voted in November,” said White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly.
The Trump administration highlighted flaws within the organization, noting UNESCO’s publication of tools for combating racism, calling on member states to accept “anti-racist” policies and compete to become “leading defenders of social justice,” as well as its 2024 “Transformative People” initiative.
According to the White House official, UNESCO has “conducted actions against Israel and the Jewish state through its Executive Board, including designating Jewish holy sites as 'Palestinian World Heritage Sites.'”
