Two Countries Block EU Sanctions Package Against Russia
Hungary and Slovakia have blocked a new EU sanctions package against Russia. This was announced by the head of Hungary's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjarto.
“Together with Slovakia, we have prevented the adoption of the sanctions package,” the minister stated. He noted that Budapest is “not ready to invest” in financial support for Ukraine or in supplying weapons to Kyiv.
The European Commission presented proposals for the 18th sanctions package against Russia in early June. It was reported that the issue of a price cap on Russian oil was discussed both within the framework of this sanctions package and in the context of the recent G7 summit. However, the rise in oil prices due to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East has rendered these plans obsolete.
