Vardan Ghukasian on the Likelihood of Being Nominated for Prime Minister
If many people, who are not elected by the people, call and say, 'Yes, we believe you should assume this responsibility,' and they stand by my side, then yes.
This was stated by the newly elected mayor of Gyumri, Vardan Ghukasian, in response to the question of whether it's possible for him to be a candidate for Prime Minister in 2026. During a conversation with reporters at the Gyumri City Hall, Ghukasian also announced that he supports a union state based on the principles of Belarus.
He reaffirmed his electoral promises, stating that businessmen from Russia will come to Gyumri: 'Here, we need to solve the hospital issues with Russia, we need to address the establishment of joint factories and enterprises, and you will see that all this will happen,' he said.
He also suggested to pro-Western forces to bring investments from Europe and America and mentioned that he would allocate land for this purpose and will do everything necessary.
In response to criticism that he expressed support for a union state, he replied, 'Let them criticize, I am not afraid at all; I am thinking very correctly. We need to maintain all this based on the principles of Belarus.'
Regarding independence, he stated, 'This is independence. Is Lukashenko doing well, or the other countries? Look at how Lukashenko behaves. We cannot change the neighbors we have; unfortunately, we are not in Europe. We need a country to base our foundation on. That's how I see it, while also defending Armenia's independence and many other issues, including sovereignty,' he said.
It is noteworthy that today the Gyumri Council elected Vardan Ghukasian as mayor with 18 votes in favor and 0 against. The ruling Civil Contract Party did not participate in the session.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan referred to the Gyumri elections.
